Philadelphia’s MOVE Organization is a deeply spiritual revolutionary group that continues to fight for the People and the Earth despite being persecuted and abused by the power structure.
Founded by the teachings of John Africa, they strongly advocate for social and environmental justice and denounce the exploitive, profit-driven ideals of capitalism. Their ideas of low consumption and economic equality clearly threatened the interests of greedy and power hungry capitalists and government officials.
In 1978, their home was raided after a year-long conflict with the city of Philadelphia who tried to evict MOVE by cutting off their food and water. One cop was killed by friendly fire, and nine MOVE members were wrongfully convicted of his murder. Eight still remain incarcerated, after Merle Africa died in prison from medical neglect.
In 1985, Philadelphia PD dropped a bomb on MOVE’s new house, murdering 11 people including John Africa and five young children. The bomb caused a fire that burned down 65 other houses when firefighters were forced to not put out the fire by police.
