One of the most skillful war leaders that the genocidal United States government faced, Red Cloud led a successful campaign known as Red Cloud’s War to secure Wyoming’s Powder Hill country for the Lakotas, Cheyennes, and Arapaho tribes.
Among the important Indian leaders in Red Cloud’s War was Crazy Horse, who later went on to lead the Great Sioux War of 1876 along with Sitting Bull and Dull Knife, famously defeating General Custer at Little Bighorn.
Red Cloud later went on to be deceived by General Sherman into signing the 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie, forcing the Sioux into the reservations that they remain imprisoned in today.
